The Printing Revolution Past Scenario Present Scenario The last decade has brought about a massive revolution in the field of publishing. Past two years, in particular, saw a major shift towards Desk Top Publishing (DTP) in India. This revolutionized not only large publishing houses, but even the smallest. Today DTP means composing a document using computers with page layout, illustration and photo manipulation software. Further scanners and printers like Laser, Inkjet, image setters - replaced the manual artists, typesetters, film strippers, paste-up job workers and a host of traditional printing workers. Before the advent of DTP, a printing format took a minimum 2 weeks for completion. This format has to undergo 4 steps of manual processing. The illustration artist had to compile the pictures, sketch the background, logos, type set the text, and fix the size of the photos in respect of the final output required. Further to this the plate makers had to scan the pictures individually to the required size, which in turn produced a large number of positives. The film strippers and paste-up job workers had then to superimpose all positives onto 4 positives or negatives for plate making. Past Scenario Present
